A generic, knowledge‐based guideline assisting downstream process synthesis for biochemical products is presented. It offers process designers a structured process design methodology supporting them in capturing potentially relevant information, which might be beyond their expertise. The guideline is based on heuristic knowledge which was collected, structured in a generic way, and clearly represented. The generation of alternative downstream routes as starting points for experiments, simulation, and cost calculation is hereby accelerated. The hydrodynamic conditions as well as design and surface properties within fresh-cut food processing equipment create a complex environment for biofilms. A new experimental approach was thus proposed to identify those physical parameters impacting biofilm development in such conditions. A set-up comprising original mock-ups mimicking generic features of washing tanks (e.g. welds, folds, flat surfaces, air/liquid/wall interface) was designed. The flow pattern therein was characterized using two computational fluid dynamic calculation approaches. Full trials were run for 48 h at 10 °C with a Pseudomonas fluorescens strain to identify the preferential biofilm formation areas. As in current industrial systems, the pilot rig had recirculation areas and low wall shear stress rates (τw < 0.1 Pa) in corners and angles. These were identified as critical areas with Surface Microbial Loads (SML) over 5 Log10/cm2. However, τw alone failed to explain why SML in areas under unidirectional flow was higher than in the mock-ups. Lastly, air/liquid/wall interface conditions were more critical than immersed surfaces. This study validated the possibility of using CFD methods to understand the way in which flow pattern influences biofilm formation. We study the regularization problem for linear differential–algebraic systems. As an improvement of former results we show that any system can be regularized by a combination of state-space and input-space transformations, behavioral equivalence transformations and a reorganization of variables. The additional state feedback which is needed in earlier publications is shown to be superfluous. We provide an algorithmic procedure for the construction of the regularization and discuss computational aspects. 相似文献

A novel technique for binarization with stroke preservation of faint characters in degraded documents is proposed. It works in a multi-scale framework with an adaptive–interpolative thresholding technique. Instead of computing a global threshold value, it computes the local threshold values for a small set of grid points by observing the intensity pattern of the pixels lying in the concerned grid cells. Estimated thresholds are used, in turn, to compute the threshold values of all the remaining pixels using a fast-yet-efficient interpolation procedure. To handle noises in degraded images, this grid-based adaptive thresholding is applied in successively reducing scales to obtain the near-optimal binarization as a set of connected components. After a post-processing meant for stroke preservation with these connected components, we get the final output. The persistent overrepresentation of young drivers in road crashes is universally recognised. A multitude of factors influencing their behaviour and safety have been identified through methods including crash analyses, simulated and naturalistic driving studies, and self-report measures. Across the globe numerous, diverse, countermeasures have been implemented; the design of the vast majority of these has been informed by a driver-centric approach. An alternative approach gaining popularity in transport safety is the systems approach which considers not only the characteristics of the individual, but also the decisions and actions of other actors within the road transport system, along with the interactions amongst them. This paper argues that for substantial improvements to be made in young driver road safety, what has been learnt from driver-centric research needs to be integrated into a systems approach, thus providing a holistic appraisal of the young driver road safety problem. The reaction engineering approach (REA) is examined here to investigate its suitability as the local evaporation rate to be used in multiphase drying. For this purpose, REA is first implemented to model the convective drying of materials with various thicknesses. The relative activation energy, as the fingerprint of REA, generated from one size of a material is used to model the convective drying of the same material with different thicknesses. Because the results indicate that REA parameters can model the drying of materials with various thicknesses, REA can be scaled down to describe the local evaporation rate (at the microscale as affected by local composition and temperature). The relative activation energy is used to describe the global drying rate in modeling the local evaporation rate. REA is combined with a system of equations of conservation of heat and mass transfer in order to yield the spatial reaction engineering approach (S-REA) as a nonequilibrium multiphase drying model. By using S-REA, the spatial profiles of moisture content, concentration of water vapor, temperature, and local evaporation rate can be generated, which can assist in comprehending the transport phenomena. 相似文献

On the load bearing behavior of the self‐regulating interactive membrane foundation system The paper reports on a new foundation system, the self‐regulating membrane foundation, for embankments on deep soft soil deposits, such as stockpiles or infrastructure embankments. The load bearing behavior of the system was analyzed by means of centrifuge model tests and comprehensive numerical simulations, such as global sensitivity analyses and parametric studies. The results of those analyses and the derived design approach are presented in the paper.
